How did they do that: Harry Potter and the Six Harry’s

23 01 2011
Anyone who saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, would probably agree that the most memorable part of the movie was the beginning scene where Mad-Eye Moody creates a group of seven Potters – six of them clones of the original, and two of them still in women’s clothing.
Anyone who knows the moviemaking process would look at this and assume it was done with several cameras and a green screen. This is the typical method for compositing characters into a scene when it can’t be done in a single shot. A group of film students who attend the Art Institute of California went to see the movie opening week were very impressed with this scene. One girl stated that she was “very impressed with Daniel Radcliffe’s ability to play so many different personalities.”
However, according to the Animation World Network website (AWN), Daniel Radcliffe was not solely responsible for the acting in this scene. While he did a lot of the on-camera work, it was heavily enhanced with motion control and a CG Harry. There was also a lot of face-replacement technology involved. The director also had Daniel Radcliffe collaborate with the original actors to pin their personality for each shot. They didn’t want to risk each character developing Harry’s personality just because they put on his face.

Angry Birds to be released for larger platforms

23 01 2011
Angry Birds, a highly addictive iPhone and Android game, is going to be released for the Xbox, the Wii, and the PS3.
Angry Birds is a puzzle game with an odd story behind it. The point is to put the birds in a slingshot and fire them at the enemy – in this case, egg-stealing pigs. It has a fun design, multiple levels, and a lot of personality.
At $1.99 per download, the game has done amazingly well on the iPhone and the Android. However, recreating it for the larger consoles will doubtlessly raise the price (Xbox games average about $45). On a larger console, there is potential for more levels and improved graphics, but will consumers really welcome such a pricey rendition of an old favorite? Would you?

Spiderman: The Musical

23 01 2011
From comic book panels to the big screen, and finally to a live audience, Spiderman’s Broadway production is off to a rocky start.

SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK is a musical performance based on the Marvel comics, with lyrics by Bono. The play is directed by Julie Taymor, who also directed the excessively artistic and hopelessly plotless Beatles movie, Across the Universe.

The show was originally delayed for safety concerns after not one, but two actors were injured during rehearsals, one of whom had broken both his wrists in an aerial stunt. While flying around in spandex looks excellent in movie form, it seems to be very dangerous when performed in front of a live audience. Despite obvious safety issues, the show goes on.
Opening night was Sunday, November 28th 2010.  According to the New York Post, the show was a disaster. Stage wires were dropped onto the audience, stage props and scenery were either broken or missing pieces, and the climax of act 1 was ruined when a technical error left the star hanging from a wire, unable to get down or finish his performance. At the end of the show, many audience members still didn’t know what the story was about.

Documentary Gear: What You Need

23 01 2011

Want to get started making your own documentary?

Recently we read this great post on Outside-Blog about suggestions for gear for the aspiring documentarian.  All you really need to make documentaries are just a few lightweight cameras that can shoot 1080×1920 HD video and some audio equipment to get that perfect audio. Here are the essentials needed:

1 Canon EOS 5D Mark II ($2,499)

1 EF 24-105mm Lens ($1,249)

1 LCDVF Viewfinder ($99.95)

1 Panasonic AG-HMC40P Video Camera ($2,318)

2 GoPro Helmet HERO HD Cameras ($299.95)

1 13" MacBook Pro ($1,199)

1 Final Cut Studio 2 ($1,299)

1 BeachTek XLR-Mini Adapter ($399)

1 UV Filter ($19.99)

1 Polarizing Filter ($59.75)

5 Class 10 16GB SanDisk Flash Cards ($80.58)

2 Terabyte Lacie Hard Drive ($94.99)

2 Sennheiser Shotgun Microphones ($249)

2 Sennheiser Wireless Microphones ($875)

1 Pair Sennheiser Headphones ($169.95)

Buying all this equipment, brand new, would cost you around $10,900 and with California tax (8.25%) you’d need to add another $900. Eleven hundred dollars is no laughing matter, however if you compare today’s equipment with that of the past I think you’ll find shooting your own documanatry is much more affordable…and not to mention, lighter weight.
